What Is Beard Balm? A Simple Guide to Using It Right

The short answer: Beard balm is a soft, leave-in balm that conditions your beard and gives it light hold. Ours is made with beeswax, shea butter, plant oils and pure essential oils. Start with a small amount (use more for longer beards), warm it between your fingertips, rub your hands together, then massage it into your beard. Beard oil softens; balm adds shape and locks in moisture. Freedom Soap Co. Beard Balm is handmade in small batches in Conway, Arkansas, with no fillers, parabens or synthetic fragrance.

Most beard balms are built for shine. Ours is built for a beard that looks good, feels soft and stays easy to manage, using ingredients you can actually read. Here's what beard balm does, how it's different from oil, and how to fit it into a two-minute routine.

What is beard balm?

Beard balm is a blend of wax, butter and oils that you work through your beard like a light styling conditioner. The beeswax gives natural hold and helps seal in moisture. Shea butter softens coarse hair. A blend of plant oils keeps your beard feeling conditioned instead of stiff.

A good natural beard balm should melt cleanly and absorb fast. It should leave a soft, matte finish, not a shiny or sticky one. If your hands feel greasy after using it, it's the wrong balm.

Beard balm vs. beard oil: what's the difference?

  • Beard oil hydrates and softens beard hair and the skin underneath. It's light and absorbs quickly.
  • Beard balm adds hold and structure while locking in moisture. It tames flyaways and keeps your beard shaped through the day.

Many of our customers use both: oil in the morning, balm to finish. You don't need both from day one, though. Start with whichever matches what your beard needs most. Choose oil if it feels dry or itchy, and balm if it's hard to keep in place. Our Beard Oil comes in a dropper bottle, so one dropperful (one squeeze of the dropper) is all it takes. Beard Oil and Beard Balm share the same carrier oil blend, so they work well together.

How do you apply beard balm?

  1. Start with a clean beard. A wash with a handmade bar like our Eucalyptus + Mint Bar Soap works well.
  2. If you use beard oil, massage in one dropperful (one squeeze of the dropper) first and let it absorb.
  3. Start with a small amount of balm; the amount depends on your beard size, so use more for longer beards. Warm it between your fingertips, then rub your hands together.
  4. Massage it into your beard, working from root to tip, and shape as you go.
  5. Optional: run a brush or comb through to spread it evenly and set the shape.

Start with less than you think you need. You can always add a little more.

How often should you use beard balm?

Use it as needed, which for most people means daily. It's made for everyday use, and the full oil and balm routine takes about two minutes. Short beards and stubble can benefit too: oil for hydration, a light touch of balm for comfort. If your beard is longer or harder to control, you may find you reach for the balm every morning.

What's in Freedom Soap Co. Beard Balm?

Every ingredient is named:

  • Beeswax: natural hold and structure that keeps your beard shaped, not stiff.
  • Shea butter: softens coarse beard hair.
  • Apricot kernel, jojoba, sweet almond and grapeseed oils: a lightweight blend that keeps hair conditioned without heaviness. Jojoba closely resembles your skin's own oils.
  • Vitamin E
  • Pure essential oils for scent, never synthetic fragrance.

There's no mineral oil, no fillers, no parabens and no synthetic fragrance. The balm is handcrafted in small batches and poured into a 2 oz round tin.

Which beard balm scents do you offer?

Beard Balm comes in a 2 oz round tin in two scents, $13.95 each:

  • Original: earthy and balanced, made with cedarwood, pine, lavender and peppermint essential oils.
  • Lemon + Mint: crisp, bright and energizing.

Both are subtle and natural. You'll notice them up close, but they won't announce you across the room. Beard Oil comes in the same two scents, so it's easy to match.

Want the whole routine in one box? The Complete Beard Care Bundle ($44.95) puts the routine in one set, including Beard Oil, Beard Balm and our best-selling Eucalyptus + Mint handmade soap.
