What Our Pop-Up Customers Taught Us About Scent-Free Soap
Why we make Plain Jane—and why “nothing added” matters more than you might think.
There’s a moment that happens at nearly every pop-up market we attend.
Someone works their way through our display—picking up the bars, smelling one after another, reading the labels—and then asks:
Do you have anything without a scent?
At first, we simply answered the question. But after hearing it again and again, we began paying closer attention to who was asking, and why.
Some people wouldn't even step into the tent until they knew whether citrus scents were in the air. Others told us certain fragrances gave them headaches. Some simply found their skin did better without added fragrance or essential oils.
Natural does not always mean neutral
Essential oils are part of what makes our soaps distinctive. They give our scented bars their character, from bright citrus notes to cool eucalyptus and earthy patchouli. Always soft and subtle, never pungent or loud.
But even naturally derived scents are not right for everyone.
A person who avoids synthetic fragrance may also prefer to avoid essential oils. Someone else may tolerate one botanical blend but not another. And some customers just want a soap with nothing added for scent or color. Just plain.
That does not make essential oils bad. It simply means scent-free needs to mean truly scent-free. That means:
- No essential oils.
- No fragrance oils.
- No masking agents.
- Nothing added to cover the natural aroma of the soap.

SOAP BAR
Castor oil
Coconut oil
Olive oil
Sunflower oil
Shea butter
These oils are combined with water and lye during the traditional cold-process soapmaking method. As the bar cures, the ingredients transform into soap through a process called saponification.
For our other varieties, essential oils, botanicals or clays may be added for scent, color and texture.
Plain Jane simply stops before those extras are introduced.
Does a scent-free bar still work?
This is one of the questions we hear most often.
- Does it still lather?
- Does it still clean?
- Does it still feel like a good bar of soap?
Absolutely.
The lather, hardness and feel of the bar come from the base formula—not from its scent. Removing the essential oils does not remove what makes the soap work.
Plain Jane produces the same creamy lather and long-lasting bar as the rest of our collection. It simply does so without added scent.
Scent-free is not a lesser soap
Plain Jane is sometimes described as our simplest bar. That is true—but simple should not be mistaken for incomplete.
It is not watered down.
It is not an afterthought.
It is not missing the ingredient that makes the soap effective.
It is our original formula in its purest form.
For customers who have been reading labels carefully, putting scented bars back on the shelf or searching for a genuinely unscented option, Plain Jane was made with them in mind.
